On January 16 the state of Maine tied the New England record low temperature of 50 Degrees below zero set by Vermont in 1933.

GUESS WHAT? THE AIR IS CLEANER - A LOT CLEANER just read Stephen Hayward's "Index of Leading Environmental Indicators." Things got a lot better between 1980 and 2006.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) emissions fell 50%.
Ozone (O3) emissions fell 52%.
Lead emissions fell 97%.
Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) emissions fell 33%.
Particulates (PM10), emissions fell 28% (1990 to 2006).
Fine Particulates (PM2.5), emissions fell 31% (1990 to 2006).
Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) emissions fell 47%.
Hayward wrote, "The EPA has revised and updated its emissions inventory and ambient air quality levels for the six criteria pollutants through calendar year 2006, though many of the raw data are not easily accessible on the EPA's Web site." Source: http://tinyurl.com/ame9tx
